Chartered Institute of Bankers, Ghana and Bank of Ghana
ETHICS CERTIFICATION PROGRAMME
This innovative ethics certification programme has been developed and launched by Chartered Institute of Bankers, Ghana (CIB Ghana) and Bank of Ghana (BoG). This collaborative effort is in pursuit of the collective mandates of both institutions to ensure a sustainable and resilient financial services sector in Ghana. CIB Ghana, Bank of Ghana and Ghana Association of Banks (GAB) recognise the vital role that ethics and professionalism play in maintaining the stability and reputation of Ghana's financial service sector.
The programme was launched on 14th November, 2023 at the National Banking and Ethics Conference of CIB Ghana. During the launch, the Governor of the Central Bank declared that: "the ethics certification is for all employees working in the banking industry; and all bank staff must complete the certification programme and be recertified annually. Fit and proper assessment for key management positions should also include ethics certification."
Chartered Institute of Bankers, Ghana is mandated under the Chartered Institute of Bankers, Ghana Act, 2019 (Act 991) to promote the study of banking and to regulate the practice of the banking profession in Ghana. That means the Institute:
- develops trusted professionals for the financial services sector;
- puts ethics high on the agenda of banks and bankers; and
- is the talent and leadership engine for the financial services industry.
This ethics course is designed and targeted at various levels of banking staff: junior employees, managers and supervisors, and senior executives and board members. The curriculum focuses on helping financial services professionals and bankers build a strong ethical foundation and understand the ethical frameworks within which to resolve ethical dilemmas.
For junior staff, the programme will provide an understanding of the fundamental principles of banking ethics and professional conduct as per the Ghana Banking Code of Ethics and Business Conduct of the institute. For managers and supervisors, the course aims to foster ethical leadership skills. It will equip them with the knowledge and tools to identify potential ethical dilemmas, navigate conflicts of interest, and instill and role-model a culture of ethical conduct within their teams. For senior executives and board members, this programme will delve into the ethical considerations involved in strategic decision-making and governance. It will equip you with the skills to establish and oversee an effective ethics programme, ensuring that your bank's operations align with high ethical standards.
The business of banking is a business of trust. Trust arrives on foot but leaves in a Ferrari (according to Mark Carney, former Governor of Bank of England). Recent developments in our industry have adversely impacted customer confidence, employee loyalty, and stakeholder expectations. Banks, bankers, and other stakeholders must work together to restore confidence in the financial services sector. Doing nothing is not an option.
